History...

During the late 50's and early 60's in New Orleans, if you were a member of a band, you gave it a name that proclaimed royalty, or you named it after a car that you wished you had owned. Since there were so many bands named after cars, the only one left was the "Edsels," but somehow that didn't cut it.  Keeping that in mind, The Nobles were originally formed in 1959 out of a group called "The Fairlanes." they couldn't afford the car, but the royalty was free.

Times were tough for the guys, trying to get going against such stalwarts as, The Jokers, The Counts, The Corvettes, The Saxons, and the Crowns, just to name a few. Those were the days of the C.Y.O. dances, and The Nobles played them all; Sacred Heart, Redemptorist, St. Dominic, Immaculata and St. Anthony. But the Sunday night SBRD (St. Bernard Recreation Department) Dance on River Road in Chalmette was where The "early" Nobles perfected their sound. The Nobles played there almost every Sunday night for over five years, and any self-respecting Chalmette teenager knew that was where they should be.

The 1960's, although known as a Chalmette band, at that time The Nobles had few Chalmations. But in 1964 when the "numero uno" Chalmation, Danny Hebert, joined, the group's popularity grew to a new high in St. Bernard Parish.  The name of the band was even changed, and still today in some remote, unincorporated parts of St. Bernard Parish, the band is still known as "Danny and The Nobles." During that time, Eddie "Gypsy Woman" Powers was also a member.  However, The most famous Chalmation ever to join The Nobles ranks was the fabulous "Good-Rockin Ronnie Lamarque."

During the 60's and 70's, The Nobles forged their way though the Beatles invasion, Motown/R&B era and into the Disco craze. As far as the music goes, it is safe to say that over the years  the Nobles have grown and matured as a band in concert with the greatest musical revolution in history. They have played it all, constantly remaining responsive to the music of the times and delivering top notch performances.

Some may argue that the major turning point for the band came in the 80's with the greatest influx of talented musicians in The Nobles' history!  The new members raised the bar and set a new standard for musicianship in the band; an overall benchmark that no other local band has yet been able to attain. From the late 80's through today,  The Nobles have continued to demand top notch musicianship from its members.

It is important to note that for 48 years of The Nobles existence there has only been one constant; and he was drummer/leader Bill Murray.  With all of the obstacles and dynamics of keeping a band together these days, Bill Murray somehow found the formula and led the band until his retirement in December 2007.

The Nobles of today are as talented and vibrant as ever and represent the best there is to offer in musical entertainment in the Greater New Orleans area and beyond.  There have been 70 members who have passed through the ranks over the years.  Today's musician lineup is without question the best The Nobles have ever put together. No other band can boast  the talents of four bonified lead vocalists as well as a cohesive rhythm section and powerful brass to boot. All together, these superior components make The Nobles the best at their craft. What began as a garage band in the late fifties has evolved into a New Orleans Musical institution. The Nobles continue to fulfill and surpass their destiny of being the premiere choice for musical entertainment.
